Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3. If 9 is added to both, their ratio becomes 13 : 18.Find the highest number.

Solution:

Let the numbers be 2x and 3x.
Then,

{2x+9}/{3x+9}=13/18

18(2x + 9) = 13(3x + 9)

36x + 162 = 39x + 117

3x = 45

x = 15

So, the numbers are 2 × x = 2 × 15 = 30.
3 × x = 3 × 15 = 45
∴The highest number is 45.
