The monthly incomes of Radha and Sapna are in the ratio 2 : 3 and their monthly expenses are in the ratio 5 : 11. If each of them saves Rs 700 per month, then by what per cent does Sapna’s income exceed that of Radha?

Solution:

Let Radha’s income be Rs 2x and Sapna’s income be Rs 3x.
Let the expenditure of Radha be Rs 5y and Sapna be Rs 11y.
Then, 2x - 5y = 700 …(1)
3x - 11y = 700 …(2)
So, 2x - 5y = 3x - 11y
x = 6y
From equation (1)
2(6y) - 5y = 700
12y - 5y = 700
7y = 700
y = 100
∴ x = 6 × 100 = 600
Hence, Radha’s income
= Rs 2x = 2 × 600 = Rs 1,200
Sapna’s income = Rs 3x = 3 × 600 = 1,800
Thus, percentage increase

={1800-1200}/1200×100

=600/1200×100=50%
