The ratio between two numbers is 4 : 5. If each number is increased by 6, the ratio becomes 13 : 16. What is their sum?

Solution:

Let the numbers be 4x and 5x.
Then,

{4x+6}/{5x+6}=13/16

64x+96=65x+78

x = 18

So, the numbers are 4x, 5x.
= 4(18), 5(18) = 72, 90
Hence, their sum = 162
