Solution:

Let CP of an article sold at 50% profit = Rs 100
Then SP of an article sold at 50% profit = Rs 150
SP of an article sold at 40% loss = Rs 150
CP of an article sold at 40% loss

={100 ×150}/60=\Rs.250

CP of both articles = Rs (100 + 250) = Rs 350
SP of both articles = Rs (150 + 150) = Rs 300
Loss %

=50/350×100=14.28%
