One-fifth of a number is equal to

5 /8

of another number. If 35 is added to the first number, it becomes four times of the second number. Find the second number.

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y; then

1/5x=5/8y

∴x=25/6y

...(i)
And

x + 35 = 4y

⇒4y-25/8y=35

⇒7/8y=35

⇒y=40

Hence, second number = 40
