The difference between the squares of two consecutive numbers is 35. Find the numbers.

Solution:

Let the two consecutive numbers be x and (x + 1).
Then

(x + 1)^2 - x^2 = 35

⇒ x^2 + 2x + 1 - x^2 = 35

⇒ 2x = 34

∴ x = 17

Hence, numbers are 17, 18
