The sum of two numbers is 22. Five times of one number is equal to 6 times the other. Find the greater of the two number.

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y; then

x + y = 22

...(i)

5x = 6y ⇒x = 6/5y

...(ii)
Now from equations (i) and (ii)

6/5y+y=22

⇒11/5y=22

⇒y=10

and

x=6/5×10=12

Hence, greater number = 12
