If the two numbers are differ by 5 and their product is 336. What is the sum of two numbers?

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y; then
x – y = 5 ...(i)
xy = 336 ...(ii)
Now,

(x + y)^2 = (x - y)^2 + 4xy

= (5)^2 + 4 × 336 = 1369

⇒(x + y) =√ 1369 = 37
