If each of the numerator and denominator of a fraction is increased by 1, the fraction obtained is

7/8

and if each of them is decreased by 1, the fraction obtained is

6/7

. Find the fraction.

Solution:

Let the fraction be

x /y

, then

{x+1}/{y+1}=7/8

⇒8x+8=7y+7

⇒8x-7y=-1

...(i)
Again,

{x-1}/{y-1}=6/7

⇒7x-7=6y-6

⇒7x-6y=1

...(ii)
Solving equations (i) and (ii) we get x = 13 and y = 15
∴ Fraction

=13/15
