The product of two numbers is 192 and the sum of these two numbers is 28, then the smaller number is:

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y; then
xy = 192 ...(i)
x + y = 28 ...(ii)

(x - y)^2 = (x + y)^ 2 - 4xy

= (28)^2 - 4 × 192

= 784 - 768 = 16

∴ x - y = 4

...(iii)
Solving equations (ii) and (iii) we get x = 16, y = 12.
Hence, smaller number = 12
