If 1 is added to the denominator of a fraction, the fraction becomes

. If 1 is added to the numerator of the fraction, the fraction becomes 1. What is the fraction?

Solution:

Let fraction be

x /y

; then

x/{y+1}=1/2

⇒2x=y+1

⇒2x-y=1

...(i)
Again,

{x+1}/y=1

⇒x-y=-1

...(ii)
Solving equations (i) and (ii) we get x = 2 and y = 3
Hence, fraction

= 2/3
