Find the numbers if the sum of their squares is 170 and the difference of squares is 16.

Solution:

Let x and y be such numbers
Now

x^2+ y^2 + = 170

and

(x - y)^2 = 16

x^2+y^2-2xy=16

170 - 2xy = 16

170 - 16 = 2xy

154/2 = xy

xy = 77

xy = 7 × 11

So, the numbers will be 7 and 11.
