If the sum of two numbers is 22 and the sum of their squares is 404, then the product of the numbers is:

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y; then

x + y = 22

...(i)

x^2 + y^2 = 404

...(ii)
Now,

(x + y)^2 = x^2 + y^2 + 2xy

⇒ (22)^2 = 404 + 2xy

⇒ 2xy = 484 - 404

⇒ xy = 80/ 2 = 40

Hence, product of the number = 40
