From each of the two given numbers, half the smaller number is subtracted. After such subtraction, the larger number is 4 times as large as the smaller number. What is the ratio of the number?

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y,
where, y > x
According to the statement,

(y-x/2)=4(x-x/2)

y=x/2-4x-2x

y-x/2=2x

y=2x+x/2

y=5/2x

2y=5x

y/x=5/2=5:2
