If the difference in the squares of two natural numbers is 29, find the sum of the squares of the numbers.

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y

x^2-y^2=29

(x+y)(x-y)=29×1

x + y = 29

and

(x - y) = 1

So, x = 15 and y = 14

x^2+y^2=15^2+14^2

= 225 + 196 = 421.
