When Stefan purchased an item costing Rs 1,600, he had to pay the sales tax at 9% and on another item costing Rs 4,800 the sales tax was 11%. If taken the two items together on an average, what per cent of the sales tax would Stefan have to pay?

Solution:

Total sales tax paid

=\Rs. (9/100×1,600+11/100×4,800)

= Rs (144 + 528) = Rs 672
Total cost of items = Rs (1,600 + 4,800) = Rs 6,400
∴ Percentage of sales tax

=672/6400×100=10.5%
