The difference between the squares of two consecutive numbers is 25. The numbers are—

Solution:

Let the numbers are x and (x + 1)

∴ (x + 1)^2- x^2 = 25

⇒ x^2 + 1 + 2x - x^2 = 25

⇒ 2x + 1 = 25

⇒ 2x = 25 - 1 = 24

⇒ x = 24/2 = 12

∴ x + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13

Hence, the numbers are 12, 13.
