Divide Rs. 53 among X, Y, Z so that X may receive Rs. 7 more than Y, and Y may receive Rs. 8 more than Z.

Solution:

Let Y receives Rs. a. Then X receives Rs. (a + 7) and Z receives Rs. (a – 8)
But, a + 7 + a + a – 8 = Rs. 53
⇒ 3a – 1 = 53,
⇒3a = 53 + 1
⇒ 3a = 54,
⇒ a

= 54/3

= Rs. 18. = Y’s share
X’s share = a + 7 = 18 + 7 = Rs. 25
Z’s share = a – 8 = 18 – 8 = Rs. 10.
