The LCM of two numbers is 168 and their HCF is 4. Find the difference between these numbers if their sum is 52.

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y.
x + y = 52
and x × y = 168 × 6

(x - y)^2 = (x + y)^2 - 4xy

(x - y)^2 = (52)^2 - 4(168 × 6)

(x - y)^2 = 2,704 - 2,688

(x - y)^2 = 16

x - y = 4

So, the difference between the numbers = 4
