The price of onions increases by Rs 5.80 per kg every year, while the price of tomatoes increases by Rs 2.2 per kg year. If in 2001, the price of onions was Rs 25.5 per kg and that of the tomatoes was Rs 68.2 per kg, then after how many years will onion cost 50 paise per kg more than the tomatoes?

Solution:

Let onions cost 50 paise more than tomatoes after x years.
Then,

(25.5 -5.8x) - (68.2+ 2.2x)= 0.50

⇒ 25.5 + 5.8x - 68.2 - 2.2x = 0.50

⇒3.6x - 42.7 = 0.50

⇒3.6x = 43.2

⇒x=43.2/3.6=12
