Solution:

Put 1.25 = a and 2.75 = b, then,
1.25 × 1.25 + 2.75 × 2.75 + 2 × 1.25 × 2.75

= a^2 + b^2 + 2ab = (a + b)^2

= (1.25 + 2.75)^2 = (4)^2 = 16
