What is twice the sum of two negative numbers?
I. One number is 8 more than the other number.
II. The product of both the numbers is 47 more than the sum of the numbers.

Validate

Solution:

Using both the statements together:
Let one number = x
Then, other number = x + 8
According to the 2nd statement,

(x)(x+8)=(x)+(x+8)+47

x^2+8x=2x+8+47

x^2+6x-55=0

x^2+11x-5x-55=0

(x + 11) (x − 5)=0

⇒ x =- 11 \or 5

Since both the numbers are negative, x = −11
Other number = −3
Sum of both the numbers = −11 − 3 = −14
Twice the sum = (−14) × 2 = −28
