The average of 5 consecutive odd numbers A, B, C, D and E is 41. What is the product of A and E?

Solution:

Let 5 consecutive odd numbers be (x + 1), (x + 3), (x + 5), (x + 7) and (x + 9) respectively.

Now,

{ x+1+x+3+x+5+x+7+x+9}/5=41

⇒ 5x + 25 = 205
⇒ 5x = 180 ⇒ x = 36
Then, A = x + 1 = 36 + 1 = 37;
E = x + 9 = 36 + 9 = 45
Hence, their product = 37 × 45 = 1665
