The sum of three consecutive odd numbers is 38 more than the average of these numbers. What is the first of these numbers?

Solution:

Let three consecutive odd numbers be (x + 1), (x + 3) & (x + 5)
Then, average

={x+1+x+3+x+5}/3

=x+3

Now, x + 1 + x + 3 + x + 5 = x + 3 + 38
⇒ 2x + 6 = 38 ⇒ 2x = 32 ⇒ x = 16
Hence, Ist number = x + 1 = 16 + 1 = 17
