The average of 5 consecutive even numbers A, B, C, D and E is 34. What is the product of B and D?

Solution:

Let 5 consecutive even numbers A, B, C, D and E be x, x + 2, x + 4, x + 6 and x + 8 respectively.

Now,

{x+x+2+x+4+x+6+x+8}/5

= 34

⇒ 5x + 20 = 170
⇒ 5x = 150
⇒ x = 30
Then, B = x + 2 = 30 + 2 = 32; D = x + 6 = 30 + 6 = 36
Hence, their product = 32 × 36 = 1152
