A man had seven children. When their average age was 12 years, the child who was 6 years of age died. What was the average of the surviving children 5 years after the death of the child?

Validate

Solution:

Average age of 7 children = 12 years
Total ages of 7 children = 12 × 7 = 84 years
Age of 1 child who died = 6 years
Total ages of remaining 6 children = 84 – 6 = 78 years
∴ Average age of 6 children

=78/6

= 13 years
∴ Average age of 6 children after 5 years = 13 + 5 = 18 years
