The average of four consecutive odd numbers is 12. What is the lowest odd number?

Solution:

Let 4 consecutive odd numbers be (x + 1), (x + 3), (x + 5) and (x + 7).

Now,

{x+1+x+3+x+5+x+7}/4=12

⇒ 4x + 16 = 48
⇒ 4x = 32 ⇒ x = 8
Hence, lowest odd number = x + 1 = 8 + 1 = 9
