Out of nine persons, 8 persons spent Rs 30 each for their meals. The ninth one spent Rs 20 more than the average expenditure of all the nine. The total money spent by all of them was:

Solution:

Number of persons = 9
8 persons amount spent for meal = Rs 30 each
Total money = 8 × 30 = Rs 240
The ninth person spent Rs 20 more than the average expenditure of all the nine = 20 + x
Where x is the average of all the nine persons
Now,

{240+20+x}/9=x

260+x=9x

x=32.5

Total money spent by all = 240 + 20 + 32.5 =Rs 292.50
