Solution:

Average age of father and son = 28 years
Total age of both father and son = 56 years
Ratio of their age = 3x : 1x
Let the age of son = x
Age of father = 56 - x
According to the statement,
3x + 1x = 56
4x = 56

Age of the son x = 14 years
Age of the father = 56 - x = 56 - 14 = 42 years
