The average mark of a student in 8 subjects is 87. Out of these, the highest mark is 2 more than the one next in value. If these two subjects are eliminated, the average mark of the remaining subjects is 85. What is the highest score?

Solution:

Average marks of 8 students = 87
Total marks = 87 × 8 = 696 marks
Let the two subjects = x, x + 2
According to the statement,

696-{(x+x+2)/6}=85

696 -2 x -2 = 710

2x=184

x = 92

Now the highest marks be x + 2 = 92 + 2 = 94 marks
