A garden is 24 m long and 14 m wide. There is a path 1 m wide outside the garden along its sides. If the path is to be constructed with square marble tiles 20 cm × 20 cm, find the number of tiles required to cover the path.

Solution:

Area of the garden = 24 × 14 = 336 sq. m
Area of the (garden + path) = 26 × 16 = 416 sq. m
∴ Area of the path = 416 – 336 = 80 sq. m
Area of 1 tile = 20 × 20 = 400 sq. cm = .04 sq. m
∴ Number of tiles required to cover the path =

{80}/{0.04}

= 2000
