Area of the new rectangle = $\frac{120}{100}\mathit{x}\times \frac{85}{100}\mathit{y}$ = 1.020 xy sq. metre
∴ Increase in the area = 1.02 xy – xy = .02 xy sq. m.
∴ Percentage increase = $\frac{0.02\mathit{x}\mathit{y}}{\mathit{x}\mathit{y}}\times 100$ = 2 %
