For what value of a is the coefficient of

in the product (2y - 1) (y - h) (ay + 1) equal to 0 and the constant term equal to 2?

Solution:

∵ (2y - 2) (y - h) (ay + 1) = 2ay^3 + (2 - 2ha - a)y^2 + y (ha - 1) + h

According to the question,
2 - 2ha - a = 0
and h = 2
From equations, (i) and (ii), we get
2 - 4a - a = 0

⇒a=2/5
