The ratio of present ages of two brothers is 1 : 2 and 5 years ago the ratio was 1 : 3. What will be the ratio of their ages after 5 years?

Solution:

Let their present ages be x and 2x years; then

{x-5}/{2x-5}

⇒ 3x – 15 = 2x – 5
∴ x = 10
Hence, their present ages 10 years and 20 years
Required ratio =

{10+5}/{20+5}

3/5

= 3 : 5
