There is a leak in the bottom of a cistern. When the cistern had no leak, it was filled in 2½ hours. If now takes half an hour longer, if the cistern is full of water, how long would it take in leaking itself empty, in case the water leaks out at double the rate after half the cistern becomes empty?

The cistern emptied in 1 hour =

2/5 - 1/3

of the cistern i.e., 1 cistern is emptied in 15 hours.
Now,

1/2

cistern is emptied in

hours.
But, remaining half cistern is emptied in

{15}/2 × 1/2

{15}/4

hours
∴ Total time taken to empty the cistern =

{15}/2+{15}/4

{45}/4

hours = 11 hours 15 min.
