Blue baby syndrome is caused due to the excess of nitrates in the drinking water. After drinking this water, body converts the nitrates into nitrites and these bind to the haemoglobin in the body and forms methemoglobin, which is unable to carry oxygen and baby's skin turns blue. This disease is also known as infant methemoglobinemia.
