String of pearls is a security doctrine developed by China to encircle India in its own backyard i.e. Indian Ocean. Under this doctrine, China is building ports in different neighbouring countries of India, few of these ports are Hambantota (Sri Lanka), Gwadar (Pakistan) and Chittagong (Bangladesh).
