A bucket contains milk mixed with water, of which 3 parts are water and 5 parts are milk. A part of the mixture is removed from the bucket and is replaced by water. What portion of the mixture should have been removed so that the new mix contains milk and water is equal proportion?

Validate

Solution:

Let total quantity in the mixture be a litre
∴ Water

={3\a}/8\liter,\milk={5\a}/8 \liter

∴ Let ‘b’ litre mixture is removed then, water removed

={3\b}/8, \milk \removed={5\b}/8

∴ According to question.

{3\a}/8+{3\b}/8+\b={5\a}/8-{5\b}/8

{3\a}/8-{5\a}/8={3\b}/8-\b-{5\b}/8

-2/8\a={3\b-8\b-5\b}/8

-{2\a}/8\a=-{10\b}/8

\a=5\b

on solving we get

\b/\a=1/5
