An airline has a certain free luggage allowance and charges for excess luggage at a fixed rate per kg. Two passengers Raja and Rahim have

of luggage between them, and are charged

, respectively for excess luggage. Had the entire luggage belonged to one of them, the excess luggage charge would have been

₹ 5400 .

What is the weight of Rahim's luggage?

Solution:

If free luggage is

y {kg}

, then Raja has

x {kg}

, and Rahim has 2x kg extra luggage.
Then,

2 y+3 x=60

3 x

kg extra luggage cost

₹ 3600,

then

₹ 5400

will be cost of

{5400}/{3600} × 3 x= {9}/{2} x

⇒ y+3 x= {9}/{2} x

⇒ y= {3}/{2} x

⇒ x=10 {kg}

and

y=15 {kg}

So, Rahim's luggage is

y+2 x=35 {kg}
