x

are

Solution:

Given, distance between the points

(x, 0)

and

(-7,0)=10

units.
Here,

x_{1}=x, y_{1}=0, x_{2}=-7

and

y_{2}=0

∴ \;\;

Required distance

=√{(x_{2}-x_{1})^{2}+(y_{2}-y_{1})^{2}}

⇒ \;\; √{(-7-x)^{2}+(0-0)^{2}}=10

⇒ \;\; ±(x+7)=10

If

x+7=10,

then

x=3

If

-(x+7)=10,

then

x=-17
