Pipe A can fill a tank in 8 hours; B can fill in 6 hours; C can empty in 12 hours. A and B are opened alternatively with C. In how much time the tank is filled if A is opened first?

Solution:

Portion of tank filled when A and C open together for 1 hour

=1/8-1/12=1/24

Portion of tank filled when B and C open together for next hour

=1/6-1/12=1/12

Portion of tank filled in two hours

=1/24+1/12=1/8

Hence, whole tank will be filled in

2×8=16

hours.
