The ratio between the length and breadth of a rectangular field is 3 : 2. If the length is increased by 5 m, the new area of the field will be 2600 sq m. What is the breadth of the rectangular field?

Solution:

Suppose that the length and breadth of field are 3x and 2x respectively.

(3x+5)×2x=2600

(3x+5)×x=1300

3x^{2}+5x-1300=0

3x^{2}+65x-60x-1300=0

x(3x+65)-20(3x+65)=0

(3x+65)(x-20)=0

∴

x=20

x≠-65/3

Hence, Breadth of field

=20×2=40m
