Seven years ago, the ratio of the ages of Sonu and Suresh was 3 : 4 respectively. 9 years hence, the ratio of their ages will be 7 : 8 respectively. What is the present age of Suresh?

Solution:

Let seven years ago, the age of Sonu and Suresh are 3x and 4x respectively.
Then,

{(3x+7)+9}/{(4x+7)+9}=7/8

{3x+16}/{4x+16}=7/8

24x + 128 = 28x + 112

4x = 16x = 4

x=4

∴ Present age of Suresh

= 4x + 7

= 4 × 4 + 7

= 16 + 7 = 23

years.
