(A) Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was founded in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham. In 1871, the Survey was revived as a separate department and Cunningham was appointed as its first Director-General. To this day, Alexander Cunningham is revered as the‘Father of Indian Archaeology’.
