(A) The National Human RightsCommission (NHRC) of India isan autonomous public bodyconstituted on 12 October1993 under the Protection ofHuman Rights Ordinance of 28September 1993. It was givena statutory basis by theProtection of Human RightsAct, 1993, (TPHRA). The NHRCis responsible for theprotection and promotion ofhuman rights, defined by theAct as ‘rights relating to life,liberty, equality and dignity ofthe individual guaranteed bythe Constitution or embodied inthe International Covenants’.
