Let number of girls $=\mathit{x}$
and number of boys $=\left(400-\mathit{x}\right)$
Now, cut off cleared by girls $=\frac{\mathit{x}\times 80}{100}=\frac{4\mathit{x}}{5}$
and cut off cleared by boys
$\frac{\left(400-\mathit{x}\right)\times 60}{100}=\frac{1200-3\mathit{x}}{5}$

$\Rightarrow \frac{4\mathit{x}+1200-3\mathit{x}}{5}=260\Rightarrow \mathit{x}+1200=1300$
$\Rightarrow \mathit{x}=1300-1200=100$
$\therefore \mathit{x}=100$
Hence, one hundred girls appeared in the test.
