A boat covers a certain distance down stream in 1 h, while it comes back in 1.5 h. If the speed of the stream be 3 km/h , what is the speed of the boat in still water?

Solution:

(4) Let speed of boat in still water = x km/h
If distance covered by boat in one side be d, then

d/{x + 3}

= 1 .........(i)
[∵ speed downstream = x +3 ]
and

d/{x - 3}=3/2

[∵ speed upstream = x - 3 ]
⇒ 2d = 3 (x - 3) [using Eq. (i)]
⇒ 2 (x + 3) = 3(x - 3)
⇒ 2x + 6 = 3x - 9
⇒ x = 15 km /h
