Solution:

(a ) Let the total production of hematite be x kg.
Amount of ore gets wasted = 20% of x
Remaining amount = 80% of x
Amount of pure iron obtained
=

25/100×80/100×x=1/5x

According to the question,
Amount of iron obtained in a year = 80000kg
∴

1/5x

= 80000
or x = 400000 kg
