The ratio of two numbers is 5 : 9. If each number is decreased by 5, the ratio becomes 5 :11. Find the numbers.

Solution:

(b) Let the two numbers be x and y, respectively,
Then,

x/y = 5/9

And,

{x-5}/{y-5

5/11

⇒11x -55 = 5y - 25 ⇒ 11x -5y =30
⇒ 55x -45x = 150

\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;(\since \;\;x/y = 5/9)

⇒x = 15

{9x}/5 =

27
Hence, numbers are 15 and 27.
