The ratio of the ages of the father and the son at present is 5:1. After 10 yr the ratio will become 3 :1. What is the sum of the present ages of the father and the son?

Validate

Solution:

\x/\y = 5/1

⇒ x = 5y
Again from question,

{\x+10}/{\y + 10} = 3/1

⇒ x + 10 = 3y + 30
⇒ 5y-3y = 20
⇒ 2y = 20
(From eq (i))
⇒ y = 10
∴ From Eq. (i), x = 50
∴ Sum of the ages = x + y = 50 -i-10 = 60 yr
